“It’s a womenswear collection not a knitwear collection. The fabric controls the garment. Knitting is just the medium.”
Alex Gore Browne, Financial Times, 2005

All About Alex

Alex Gore Browne is a British knitwear designer and knit consultant. Based in England, she shapes unique pieces by hand on a range of industrial knitting machines, continually creating new structures with new techniques and new combinations of yarn. She is inspired by, and never confined by, the boundaries of knitting. Her work is as innovative as it is refined.

Alex began her career in knitwear design in 2000. She studied at London’s Central Saint Martins where she completed a BA in Textiles with First Class Honours, followed by an MA in Fashion. Along with peers including Jonathan Saunders and Roksanda Ilincic, Alex trained under the guidance of tutor and course director Louise Wilson.

On graduating from Central St Martins in 2000 (returning thereafter as a visiting lecturer), Alex launched her own label, Alex Gore Browne. This was partially due to a prestigious award from the Lottery Fund. Her unique, wearable designs - knitted jackets, body-skimming dresses, form-fitting tops in innovative fabrics – soon became a hit with the fashion press and were featured in publications such as VOGUE, Saturday Telegraph Magazine, YOU and Sunday Times Style. The Financial Times hailed Alex as ‘the Vionnet of knitwear’ while style writer Plum Sykes celebrated Alex as one to watch in VOGUE USA, saying "Alex Gore Browne does exquisitely cool knitwear".

The womenswear label was stocked in top stores Harrods, Harvey Nichols, Selfridges, Net-A-Porter and Browns. In addition, Alex sold her designs to fashion houses including Matthew Williamson, Donna Karan and Louis Vuitton who included her pieces in ready-to-wear collections which were sold around the world. She also designed and made showpieces for Alexander McQueen under the direction of the late Alexander ‘Lee’ McQueen.

Since its inception, fans and wearers of the brand have included style icons Madonna, Kate Moss, Sienna Miller, Jacquetta Wheeler, Amber Heard and Victoria Beckham, who said "Alex Gore Browne is one of the best young knitwear designers around”.

Following on from the success of her label, Alex was appointed knit consultant at Nina Ricci under the direction of Peter Copping and then returned as a knit consultant again for Alexander McQueen under the direction of Sarah Burton. Today; Alex is back focusing on her own label with a relaunch of more stunning designs, creating a fresh, feminine and ultimately elegant silhouette.
